Dante is Ringing Us Up
Inferno (Italian for 'Hell') is the first part of Italian writer Dante Alighieri's 14th-century narrative poem The Divine Comedy, followed by Purgatorio and Paradiso. The Inferno describes the journey of a fictionalized version of Dante himself through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine concentric circles of torment located within the Earth; it is the "realm [...] of those who have rejected spiritual values by yielding to bestial appetites or violence, or by perverting their human intellect to fraud or malice against their fellowmen". As an allegory, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin. The circles are Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery, leading to the Centre of Hell.
In the very center of Hell, condemned for committing the ultimate sin (personal treachery against God), is the Devil, referred to by Virgil as Dis (the Roman god of the underworld. The arch-traitor, Lucifer, was once held by God to be fairest of the angels before his pride led him to rebel against God, resulting in his expulsion from Heaven. Lucifer is a giant, terrifying beast trapped waist-deep in the ice, fixed and suffering.
There are similarities here with Trumpland for descending the USA into Hell or climbing up nine stories of a Trump building with no stairs. On can easily imagine all the circles (or floors) applying to MAGA with the exception of Limbo which might be reserved for those fooled by MAGA who may be redeemed in the future. It is not hard to see that Lust (think The Donald and Matt Gaetz), Gluttony (think McDonald’s hamburgers), Greed (think the Trump Organization), Wrath (think revenge and lawfare), Heresy (think Christian Nationalism, not very Christian), Violence (think January 6 and death threats), Fraud (think Trump University) and Treachery (take your pick).
The Devil has lured Trump-Lucifer and MAGA to the very center of Hell where he is stuck in ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) as the ultimate stasis sticking point of his impact on the USA, or perhaps he will be trapped by his association with Jeffrey Epstein, who does seem to have the countenance of the Devil as well.
